Instagram does not offer a dedicated page to find all the invitations sent to private accounts. The feature exists, but it is scattered across several menus and a data export tool that most users are unaware of. pending_follow_requests file: the only reliable list on Instagram
The most comprehensive method to find your pending follow requests involves downloading your personal data. Instagram generates a specific file named pending_follow_requests in the followers_and_following folder (in HTML or JSON format depending on the chosen option).
This file exclusively lists the private accounts to which a request has been sent and that have not yet responded. It is distinct from the regular followers and following lists and includes the status of each request. Unlike manual searching profile by profile, this list is complete.
To access it, you need to go through the profile settings, then the “Your Activity” or “Privacy and Security” section, and request a data download. Instagram then sends a link via email, usually within a few hours. The downloaded folder contains several subfolders, and it is in followers_and_following that you will find the sought-after file.
Before searching within the app itself, it is quicker to check the invitations sent on Instagram using this export method, which remains the only one to guarantee a comprehensive view.
Follow requests sent from the Instagram app
The mobile app also allows you to spot some pending requests, but with clear limitations. There is no visible “sent invitations” section in the main menu.
Manual search via the following list
The only clue in the app is to check your own following list and see, profile by profile, if a “Requested” button appears instead of the “Follow” button. This grayed-out button indicates that a request is pending.
This approach works if you remember the accounts you contacted. For someone who regularly sends requests, it quickly becomes impractical. The app does not filter profiles based on the request status.

Several guides published before mid-2025 refer to menu paths that have changed since. Instagram has reorganized the “Settings” section several times, notably moving access to data downloads and privacy tools. Tutorials that indicate a path like “Settings > Security > Download Data” may no longer correspond to the current interface. Cancel a pending follow request on Instagram
Once a pending profile is identified, cancellation is done directly from the concerned account’s page. The “Requested” button allows you to withdraw the request with a single tap. The person is not notified of the cancellation.

- The cancellation is immediate and silent: the private account receives no alert, and the request disappears from its list of pending notifications.

These tools do not provide access to the pending requests themselves (Instagram does not share this data via its public API), but they allow you to spot changes in your following list.
Using third-party apps to access Instagram data carries risks. Instagram may restrict or suspend an account that uses unauthorized services accessing its data. Before installing such tools, ensure they do not ask for your login credentials, which would violate the platform’s terms of use.

The data download offers two formats: HTML (viewable in a browser) and JSON (usable by data processing tools). For regular use, the HTML format is sufficient. The file opens in any browser and presents the information in a list format with usernames and dates.
The receipt time varies. Instagram announces processing that can take several hours, sometimes longer for accounts with high activity volume. The request can be renewed if the first link expires before downloading.
